Speaker: Rolland Lyle Duque, MSc. OTR, FOTAP In this talk, the characteristics of different DSI’s and sensory integration intervention will be discussed. Lyle Duque will add light to some common misconceptions about sensory integration which has caused it to be confused with other approaches and applied erroneously. There will be answers to questions like: does brushing a child’s extremities and providing massage constitute classical SI intervention? Is it necessary to have suspended equipment like swings when providing SI? How is it different from sound-based therapies like the Tomatis Method or Auditory Integration Training? How can you tell if a child’s behavior is due to DSI or just a behavior problem? Who is qualified to provide SI intervention? This process allows our students to develop a love for learning so they may fully enjoy their family, community, and all that life has to offer. Students with ASD learn and gain their life experience at the residential program and then generalize to their home and community. However, we cannot enhance their quality of life by just providing the environment and experience. We need to educate our students and students need to learn and have their own successful experiences. When they generalize those in their real life at their house and/or in the community, their quality of life is enhanced. This enabling community will nurture independent living, where our young adults can work, live and play through the collaborative efforts of local government, civic groups, civil society and famillies.
